CORRECTION: Wandering Son is by Shimura Takako not Moto Hagio. I apologize for the error. Thanks to Julia for correcting me. They Were Elven were published as four comic issues under Viz's Flower Comics label in 1995. - I just listened to this podcast, and I wanted to say that it appears that many of the impressions of the participants, on the age and audience of the stories, are correct. One of the things that was disappointing about A Drunken Dream (aside from the poor proofreading of the back matter) was the lack of explanation for the publication history of the individual stories. The copyright dates given in the TOC appear, as far as I can tell, to reflect the dates of the book collections, not the original magazine publication. Matt Thorn's original announcement gives the following dates:
Bianca - 1970
Girl on Porch with Puppy - 1971
Autumn Journey - 1971
MariƩ, Ten Years Later - 1977
A Drunken Dream - 1980
Hanshin - 1984
Angel Mimic - 1984
Iguana Girl - 1991
The Child Who Comes Home - 1998
The Willow Tree - 2007
I also wish that the book had included information on where the stories were originally published, since they cover a wide range of magazines and demographics. According to the bibliography in Hagio's Japanese Wikipedia article:
Bianca - Shoujo Friend, shoujo
Girl on Porch with Puppy - COM, alternative / shounen
Autumn Journey - Bessatsu Shoujo Comic, shoujo
MariƩ, Ten Years Later - Big Comic Original, seinen
A Drunken Dream - newly drawn for Kingin Suna Kishi (an artbook)
Hanshin - Petit Flower, originally shoujo, essentially josei by the time these stories came out
Angel Mimic - Petit Flower
Iguana Girl - Petit Flower
The Child Who Comes Home - Igyou Collection (?), which appears to be a horror anthology
The Willow Tree - ?
So the stories range from shoujo for elementary school girls, to a competitor to Garo, to a magazine that ran some of the most sophisticated and groundbreaking female-oriented manga of the 80's and 90's (including many of Hagio's major works).
