Manga For 2011
1. Bride's Story - Simply beautiful art and a fascinating experience in historical exoticism.
2. Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths - Ever since I read Fred Schodt's "Manga! Manga!", I've wanted someone to translate this. 3. Lychee Light Club/No Longer Human -- An Usamaru Furuya late-night double feature horror show. In my dream, some kid reads Genkaku Picasso and likes it, then picks up one of these manga and becomes a Baudelairean decadent.
4. Mega Man Gigamix - Hitoshi Ariga is just SO. GOOD. Even though I normally hate tie-ins. THIS is the kind of children's manga that ought to get translated, it's way above the typical CoroCoro Comics detritus.
5. The Drops of God - The year's most entertaining(ly silly) shonen manga beneath a seinen skin. Honorable Mention: No. 5 - It's not my favorite Taiyo Matsumoto manga, but the app design and price point is perfect. I wish more manga were released like this, although the fact that they only released it on iPad and not other devices or tablets
is a problem.
Honorable Mention #2: A Zoo in Winter - Jiro Taniguchi's maybe-semi-autobiographical Bakuman for grown-ups. Honorable Mention #3: Edo Nekoe Jubei Otogizoshi (on jmanga) - The kind of thing jmanga is good for: weird manga. Honorable Mention #4: The Manga Guide to the Universe - I think this is the best in the Manga Guide series, although maybe it'sjust because astronomy and the nature of the universe is more interesting to me than, say, economics or calculus.
